Claire Mehling

Nursery Assistant and Before-School Care

Claire Mehling identifies as a true Waldorf child. Born in Germany to an American mother and German father, she attended Kindergarten through 5th grade at a German Waldorf school, and completed 6th through 8th grade at the Marin Waldorf School in California.

After high school, she went on to receive her B.A. in Comparative Literature from Brown University. During college, Claire studied abroad in Argentina, before taking a semester off to re-evaluate her academic trajectory. During her time off, she farmed and traveled in Europe, where she was well served by life skills she could clearly trace back to her Waldorf education.

After college, Claire again traveled, farmed, pursued her love of art, and fed her appetite for learning in Europe before returning to the U.S. in 2010. After a year in Maine, farming and working on urban gardens with underserved children and refugees, Claire moved back to San Francisco, where she embarked on pursuing a Ph.D. in philosophy.

She realized, however, that her hands and feet were always cold, her back was stiff, and her connection to the immediacy of life was slipping away, so she put this pursuit on hold, and followed the call to move to New Orleans and have more magic in her life instead. She came with the dream of being surrounded by friends, starting a community space and healing center, and working in Early Childhood at the Waldorf School of New Orleans. It’s a good thing she trusted her gut, because her dreams are all coming true.
